With a game against high-flying Peterborough United promising goals and excitement I put myself forward for the 250 word match report.
Rovers lined up in Darren Ferguson’s favoured 5-3-2, which fails to get the best out of James Coppinger and Tomy Rowe, but does make us look more solid, at the cost of creativity.
The visitors, backed by an impressive away following, had the better of the first half, with Ian Lawlor parrying one well-hit shot, whilst another attack saw a shot from distance crash of the bar. Rovers struggled to muster any clear openings, though Alfie May had a half-chance saved by Peterborough’s keeper.
In the second half Rovers saw more of the ball, threatening the Posh goal often, but with the formation allowing Coppinger little freedom, the killer pass was lacking. Still, there was reason to be cheerful as Jordan Houghton, who was so key to last season’s success, made his long-awaited return, replaced Niall Mason.
Liam Mandeville, who’s had a disappointing start to the season, in view of his impressive pre-season, replaced Coppinger. Playing the deeper role seemed to suit him, projecting his ability to get in the ball and go past people with ease. In a final push for the win Andy Williams came on, surprisingly replacing the ever-energetic May, when John Marquis, having an off day, looked the more obvious candidate.
All in all Rovers looked solid if not exciting, whilst Joe Wright’s continued phenomenal improvement saw him deliver another man of the match performance.
