Bradford City 1-2 Doncaster Rovers; 250 word match report

Charlton Athletic 2-0 Doncaster Rovers

Rovers traveled to face Bradford with neither side on form, and each in need of a result. The game began quietly with neither side creating a chance in the first quarter, with the only incident seeing Cedric Evina stretchered off.

It wasn’t until the end of the half that Bradford applied pressure with Sam Johnstone having to make a save at his near post to prevent an own goal from the head of Luke McCullough. However, the inevitable happened four minutes into injury time when some smart link up play allowed John Stead to finish smartly from 15 yards out. Johnstone was called into action again shortly after, making a brilliant double stop to maintain the score ahead at the desperately needed break.

Rovers began the second half playing at a much greater tempo helped by Richie Wellens, back at his best, pulling the strings in midfield. On 59 minutes Liam Wakefield’s enticing ball was met 2 yards out by Reece Wabara to tap home the equaliser. Bradford offered no real threat in the second half as Rovers’ defence held strong and Johnstone dealt comfortably with free-kicks and crosses.

This allowed Rovers’ pressure to mount, and only 10 minutes after the first goal Curtis Main took the ball down well just outside the area and hammered it into the top corner of the Bradford goal; 2-1 Rovers. From then on Rovers held out well to ensure all three points were taken back home to South Yorkshire.
