The hands of Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies denied Doncaster Rovers their 28th win over their local rivals. Davies’ added-time wonder save from James Coppinger’s close-range effort ensured both sides shared the spoils in this feisty South Yorkshire derby.
Rovers edged both halves, performing well in all areas. In particular, Niall Mason and Matty Blair played out of their skins in defence, showing just how versatile and important they are for this squad.
The Tykes came into the game towards the end of the first half enjoying a spell with a few half-chances but Rovers gladly dealt with them.
The second half sprang into life when, in the 52nd minute, Herbie Kane headed into action, nodding home a nicely weighted cross delivered by Coppinger to give Rovers a deserved lead.
For the next ten minutes Rovers defended well but were unfortunately pegged back when Cauley Woodrow, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, was first to react to the flick-on, poking the ball past Ian Lawlor.
Barnsley stepped up a gear following the goal, but could not make it count and from then on Rovers dominated the game with brilliant chances for Alfie May and Coppinger unfortunately coming to nothing.
The final moments of the game saw Coppinger have the chance to win it for Rovers, after Kane did well to cut the ball back to him. However, Davies spread himself well and saved to earn his side, with all things considered, a very good point.
