They say that when it rains it pours, and so it proved to be for Rovers on a cold Tuesday night in Cambridge.
The first half saw a full-frontal assault on the home side’s goal that spelt total Donny dominance in all but the scoresheet. Tommy Rowe’s domineering midfield performance looked to have paid dividends early on after he put the ball on a sixpence for Joe Dodoo who was unlucky not to convert. We then hit the post, rattled the bar and saw goal line scraps cleared before the U’s, with seconds left on the clock, latched on to an unfortunate slip from Joseph Olowu to dispatch the ball in low with only their second shot of the game.
Somebody call the Copps.
With the away side still reeling from the injustice of the first 45 minutes, it didn’t take long for Cambridge to double their lead from a move that mirrored Rovers’ attempts earlier on in the game. Dodoo converted a superb cut back from Matt Smith, who showed great energy throughout, on 71 minutes. But the visitor’s fate was sealed in stoppage time following a brisk counterattack that saw another rare opportunity converted.
Safety seems a long stretch now for the reds, but if you’re looking for silver linings I got my missus to agree to a four-hour round trip to watch this one in the freezing cold. Miracles do happen.

Saw this on on IFollow and genuinely saw cause for cautious optimism. When your struggling nothing goes for you but I actually enjoyed the first half in particular. For me Rovers have been relegated for a couple of weeks now but there is hope for a good shot at giving things a decent try before the season ends. Recent permanent signings (including today’s) bode well for next season which I fear will be in league 2.
