Good news; the football season is back! The bad news for Rovers fans however is that it’s specifically the 2015-16 season that has returned. A missed penalty and the consolation of a late winner bringing a feeling of deja-vu to those who travelled to the Crown Ground.
At least Rovers got the penalty miss out the way early; Andy Williams seeing his effort saved by Aaron Chapman; the Stanley ‘keeper redeeming himself after bundling over Matty Blair.
Scare survived Accrington went ahead as living anagram Rommy Boco slotted under Ross Etheridge. But mercifully the lead was short-lived; Tommy Rowe weaving into the area before firing home the equaliser to complete an eventful opening 12 minutes.
That wasn’t it for the half though as Matty Pearson put Stanley back in front after half an hour; his low long-range strike just beating Etheridge.
The second half proved less eventful, but arguably more frustrating as Rovers had much of the play, but struggled to fashion chances until Liam Mandeville’s cross was turned home by Williams with eight minutes to go.
Point secured you’d hope, but alas not. As the game edged into a second minute of injury time Accrington went where many of last season’s opponents had gone before them, and scored a late winner. Chris Eagles picking out Sean McConville who curled an excellent volley into the far corner for the victory.
