podular STAND podcast: the Belle Vue episode

The Town End of Doncaster Rovers' Belle Vue ground, pictured in the 1970s, with 'the Cow Shed' stand still in place.

It’s almost 13 years since Doncaster Rovers moved to the Keepmoat Stadium, and yet, whenever I’m prompted to think about watching Doncaster Rovers, my mind still goes to Belle Vue.

Opened in 1922, Belle Vue evolved and mutated like most inter-war football grounds; growing to accommodate the post-war boom in attendances and the anticipation of Doncaster Rovers’ 1950s success. Before contracting in on itself through a combination of better safety standards, diminishing crowds, neglect and poor upkeep.

In the 20th episode of the popular STAND podcast, podular STAND, Jack Peat and I (Glen Wilson) look back at Rovers’ home of 85 years. Join us as we move stand-by-stand around the ground and revel in its oddities, lament having missed its heyday, and reveal the surprising location of the ground’s best vantage point.

podular STAND continues to come to you more regularly in 2020, with a new episode available on the final Friday of every month.
