On visiting markets over cracking markets

On visiting markets over cracking markets

I’m not really sold on the book I‘m currently reading. It was recommended by a friend, so I’m giving it a fair go, but I’m 117 pages in and struggling to empathise with either the characters or the author. The main protagonist is from Yorkshire, but lives in London, yet any references to her life in Yorkshire are made as if written for a middle-class London audience. It’s cliched, dismissive to the point of patronisation, and I can’t get past it. Nor, given that the author is from and indeed lives in Yorkshire, can I begin to understand it. Blackburn Rovers 1-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

Blackburn Rovers 1-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

Rovers travelled over the Pennines for what, on paper, looked the toughest away day of the season against promotion favourites Blackburn. How Doncaster fared would give a good indication of how the season ahead may pan out. Continue reading “Blackburn Rovers 1-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”

The fans kicking off against the EFL

The fans kicking off against the EFL

On Tuesday 29 August, Grimsby Town host Doncaster Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy, but a large number of supporters won’t be there. Instead, they’ll be three miles down the road, on a pitch of their own, in opposition to each other, but also in opposition to the Football League. Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Gillingham: 250 word match report

Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Gillingham: 250 word match report

Among Rovers fans I’d spoken to there was a clear consensus on where the team’s strengths and weaknesses lie going into this season. Good going forward, but with a defence that could lapse into a Laurel & Hardy sketch at any given moment. Continue reading “Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Gillingham: 250 word match report”

podular STAND podcast: the team of the century episode

podular STAND podcast: the team of the century episode

No transfer rumours for us. No detailed analysis of walk-in-the-park pre-season friendlies. Instead we decided to spend the summer getting our teeth into something more meaty. So, in episode nine of the podular STAND podcast we try and pin down The Definitive Doncaster Rovers XI of the 21st Century. Not the Best XI to have represented Rovers since the year 2000, but the players who most encapsulate what Rovers are about, and have been about in those seventeen years. Why can’t we just enjoy winning?

Why can’t we just enjoy winning?

There’s a great photo of Liam Mandeville’s free-kick against Grimsby, taken just as the ball strikes the inside of the post. Goalkeeper already flailing, the South Stand is a blanket of expectant faces; rows of mouths all caught in the early stages of guttural roars or yells of acknowledgement of the ball’s inevitable nestling in the back of the net. All that is, except one. Continue reading “Why can’t we just enjoy winning?”
