Beneath the Keepmoat Stadium, as you enter the Belle Vue Bar, on the wall to your left there sits a huge picture of one of Doncaster’s most famous footballers in action for England. It is not Kevin Keegan, the Armthorpe-born European Footballer of the Year, nor is it Alick Jeffrey, predicted to be one of the all-time greats before a tragic broken leg suffered against France. No. In fact it is not even a man. Instead it is Karen Walker, 83 caps and 40 goals for the national side, all achieved during the two decades she spent playing for Doncaster Belles. It’s that time of year again. League tables are starting to be annotated with Ps and Rs, play-off dreams are being shrugged off and put down to the cheddar eaten before bed, and the summer stretches out ahead of us as a long expanse of nothingness in which we’ll have to feign an interest in tennis to get our sporting kicks. Double Headache; Rovers 0-1 Crawley Town / Belles 0-4 Arsenal

Selling the fanzine over the course of a season gets you many things; sunburn, pneumonia, ignored, to name but three, but it also gets you an insight into the mood of supporters. Standing outside the ground for an hour and a half watching the day’s attendance drift by you are able to gain a sense of the fans’ prevailing mood. Saturday, was the first time in a year I had sold popular STAND to generally happy people. Yorkshire folk aren’t known for showing their emotions, but still, the overall optimism and enthusiasm brought from starting a new campaign with back to back wins was clearly evident. Three members of the Doncaster Rovers Belles squad tonight featured in their second match at the UEFA Women’s Under 19s Championships in Turkey. Sadly for the England trio of Mary Earps, Beth England and Jess Sigsworth (pictured above from left), their fixture against Spain ended in defeat, following on from an opening match loss to Sweden at the start of the week. The Belles FAWSL Continental Cup sojourn is over after defeat in their final group game away at Birmingham City. A goal in each half from Eni Aluko and Jodie Taylor proved enough to win it for the Blues who go on to face Lincoln in the semi-finals.
