Doncaster Rovers began 2019 with an almost flawless victory against Rochdale which can scarcely be described in just 250 words. Continue reading “Doncaster Rovers 5-0 Rochdale: 250 word match report”

If Kent truly is the Garden of England, then Gillingham is the bit down the side of the shed. The bit you forget about and cover sight of with a big plant pot. I hate it. Continue reading “Gillingham 1-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
It was a Boxing Day slog in the fog for Rovers who were beaten 3-0 by Fleetwood Town at a misty Highbury. The win gave the Cod Army the double over Rovers on the season, with a combined score of 7-0. Continue reading “Fleetwood Town 3-0 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
Another match, another milestone for James Coppinger as the influential midfielder made his 600th Rovers appearance. On the 26th minute the stadium rose as one to applause his achievement and sing his name. Had this been a Hollywood production then it would’ve ended with Coppinger winning the match with a wonder goal, but alas this isn’t the movies, this is League One. I’m a complicated soul; I like orange juice but not oranges; dark beer but not Guinness, and though I consider Rotherham our biggest rivals, anticipate games against Scunthorpe more eagerly. So after flogging fanzines in the sort of wind that would have had Captain Scott deciding on a duvet day, I was grateful for the warming sensation that came with rattling in two early goals against the daft metallic bastards. A wet and windy Memorial Stadium welcomed travelling fans for a game that, in cricket speak, would be determined by the coin toss. Continue reading “Bristol Rovers 0-4 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
I was having a pre-match pint when I read James Coppinger wasn’t in the squad. I contemplated staying put and ordering another. A text from a friend conveyed similar thoughts; ‘When I heard Coppinger wasn’t playing I almost went home’. Continue reading “Charlton Athletic 0-2 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
You have to go back to August 2004 for Rovers last home League win over Blackpool, Tim Ryan and Leo Fortune-West supplying the goals. Blackpool had never returned from the Keepmoat empty handed and it took something special to turn the course of this contest after an even first half. The hands of Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Davies denied Doncaster Rovers their 28th win over their local rivals. Davies’ added-time wonder save from James Coppinger’s close-range effort ensured both sides shared the spoils in this feisty South Yorkshire derby.
Rovers edged both halves, performing well in all areas. In particular, Niall Mason and Matty Blair played out of their skins in defence, showing just how versatile and important they are for this squad.
The Tykes came into the game towards the end of the first half enjoying a spell with a few half-chances but Rovers gladly dealt with them.
The second half sprang into life when, in the 52nd minute, Herbie Kane headed into action, nodding home a nicely weighted cross delivered by Coppinger to give Rovers a deserved lead.
For the next ten minutes Rovers defended well but were unfortunately pegged back when Cauley Woodrow, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, was first to react to the flick-on, poking the ball past Ian Lawlor.
Barnsley stepped up a gear following the goal, but could not make it count and from then on Rovers dominated the game with brilliant chances for Alfie May and Coppinger unfortunately coming to nothing.
The final moments of the game saw Coppinger have the chance to win it for Rovers, after Kane did well to cut the ball back to him. However, Davies spread himself well and saved to earn his side, with all things considered, a very good point.
