podular STAND podcast: the rumours episode

Yes, that’s right. Rumours of the death of the popular STAND podcast were, it transpires, greatly exaggerated. Turns out we were just resting… for a long time. After ten months away, your favour Doncaster Rovers-related podcast is back, with a reasonably eagerly anticipated twelfth episode. Continue reading “podular STAND podcast: the rumours episode”

Absent Belles

Absent Belles

Things were very different three months ago; heatwaves only lasted a day or two, England were set to disappoint at the World Cup, and Doncaster Rovers Belles were celebrating. On 13 May, I was one of a number of Doncastrians standing a hefty goal-kick away from the Thames, applauding Doncaster Rovers Belles as they took the field to face Millwall as FA Women’s Super League 2 champions. Neil Redfearn’s side had lost just once, rattled in three goals a game, and would ultimately finish the season 10 points clear of their nearest challenger. As deserving a title as you could imagine.

Scunthorpe United 1-2 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

Scunthorpe United 1-2 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

After a positive league start, expectations were high for this trip to Scunthorpe – especially upon sight of the team-sheet with Tommy Rowe the only absentee from arguably the strongest possible Rovers XI. A pleasant change from resting players, which seems to be the norm these days, and clear ambition to go on a good old cup run. Doncaster Rovers 3-0 Wycombe Wanderers: 250 word match report

Doncaster Rovers 3-0 Wycombe Wanderers: 250 word match report

We look really good,’ said one of the lads behind me with a notable tone of pleasant surprise as half-time approached. He wasn’t wrong. From the off Rovers took the game to Wanderers, dominating possession and pitch; indeed all they lacked was a decent cross and a goal – the two not mutually exclusive. Is it really a new season, without a bloke standing under a statue with a bag of paper at his feet, cursing the ice-cream van that’s parked up on his patch? Course it isn’t, so whilst we might’ve all had a lovely time at the Southend seaside, we all know things don’t get properly underway until this Saturday, when you get to turn back the cover on an August edition of popular STAND fanzine.  Continue reading “popular STAND fanzine issue 95”

Southend United 2-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

Southend United 2-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

The key to a good five-a-side team is having a good keeper, a good centre forward and enough players in between to get in the way, I told Popular Stand editor Glen Wilson on the way up to Southend after my work team won their first game of the season. And so it was the case for Rovers in their opening game of the season. Continue reading “Southend United 2-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”

County Boundaries – the case for and against Yorkshire’s national football team

County Boundaries – the case for and against Yorkshire’s national football team

Yorkshire has a national football team, no really. Formed last summer, with the aim of becoming part of CONIFA – the international governing body for Non-FIFA affiliated Associations for association football – its existence has already split opinion, including here at popular STAND fanzine. Here, first printed in issue 93 of the fanzine, Jack Peat and Glen Wilson argue the cases for and against Yorkshire’s national side. popular STAND 2018 World Cup charity sweepstake draw

popular STAND 2018 World Cup charity sweepstake draw

Technology was supposed to make things easier, less stressful. Supposed to. I spent a good few hours this week printing out humorous Yorkshire dialect team descriptors of all the competing nations for our draw, cutting them out, setting up a make-shift filming rig to video the draw, videoing our two draws, downloading Ra-Ra-Rasputin to put over the top. And then just as I was putting it all online… the video files disappeared off into the irretrievable ether. And I had to start all over again.
