podular STAND podcast: the 2002-03 season episode

Celebrating Rovers at Stoke

Human memory is a funny thing. I can remember snatches of Doncaster Rovers last season in football’s fifth tier more clearly than I can recall my mum’s birthday. It’s either the 20th or 21st, but I’ll have to check with my sister; whereas I can still see ecstatic bodies tumbling out of the Pop Side in the wake of Tristan Whitman’s celebratory pitch-length run any time I close my eyes.

Rovers spent five years as a non-league club at the turn of the millennium. At the time they felt long and arduous, as we strove to reclaim what Ken Richardson’s incendiary reign had taken from us. But looking back in hindsight, it’s hard not to feel all warm and fuzzy. But that’s nostalgia for you; and even that’s not what it used to be.

In the 19th episode of the popular STAND podcast, podular STAND, Jack Peat and I (Glen Wilson) look back at the last of those seasons in the Conference; 2002-03. We remember the joys, the annoyances, the players and the oddities, and somehow still manage to omit that hailstorm on the open terrace at Southport. Worship at the alter of our chubby, mouthy number 9, and join us now for a near hour of reminisces.

podular STAND continues to come to you more regularly in 2020, with a new episode available on the final Friday of every month.
