As I sat down to write this, a retweet appeared in my timeline. The picture within it showed a grin in a suit, pointing at a huge yellow screen, genuine smugness on his face as he gestures at a number. £800,550,000. An obscene amount of money. The national debt of Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic combined. And, ludicrously, the amount spent by Premier League football clubs in the latest transfer window. I’ve had Carly Simon in my head all day. I’ve had worse days. Yesterday Doncaster Rovers signed Curtis Main, prompting a messageboard thread on what fans should sing for him. Alas a Purple Rain adaptation would be hard to build in to, whilst the insanity of Cypress Hill just won’t scan. Thankfully Snod’s Shinpad, in a moment of inspiration akin to that when he chose his username, suggested a revision of the Carly Simon hit. How I watched football 2013-14

Convention tells us that the seasons in which your football team gets relegated are the worst seasons you can ever experience. ‘Despair’ is a word that’s thrown around a lot. ‘Hapless’ is another. This past year I watched Doncaster Rovers fall from the Championship, but neither of those words come close to fitting what I experienced, because, you know what, I really enjoyed it. I know I’m supposed to be in a permanent despondent funk as I mooch about the house toe-ending household pets, but the truth is I can’t look back on the 2013-14 season anything other than fondly. Doncaster Rovers versus Barnsley has failed to take off as a proper derby game. I don’t know why. After all, it has all the ingredients for a mutual hatred ready ingrained in our consciousness. It is hard to believe that for three years I managed to channel enough ire into actively despising Rushden & Diamonds – a bloody shoe-shop works team – when everything was pre-packaged and waiting for us across the Dearne Valley. Theo Streete played just ten matches as a professional footballer. His is the sort of blink and you miss it pro career that in most instances would fade away everywhere but a listing in a tattered Rothmans Annual. Not Streete however, instead he has an eternal residency as a footnote in South Yorkshire sporting history. That is because one hour into a match in late December 2006 he took an ambitious pot shot on goal from out on the right wing, and through doing so became that last ever goalscorer at Doncaster Rovers’ Belle Vue ground.
