As I sit and write this editorial, Twitter and indeed much of the British media, is vehemently condemning the racist abuse of England’s footballers during the national team’s match in Montenegro. And rightly so. Continue reading “Editorial: calling out racism begins at home”
It’s been a long old month or so at Rovers; disappointing defeats, frustrating draws, injuries to key players. But just as you may’ve been about to lose hope Tuesday came with some welcome cheer. Yep, issue 99 of popular STAND fanzine had been successfully sent off to the printers. Oh, and Rovers beat Bristol Rovers 4-1. Again.
Swirling wind, an awful pitch which had more sand than Brighton beach; James Coppinger and Herbie Kane on the bench and John Marquis suspended – the omens were not good. Continue reading “Blackpool 1-1 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
There are many reasons to like AFC Wimbledon as a club, but there plenty to dislike it as an away day; chiefly you can’t see a bloody thing from the away terrace, and not since Kingstonian were primary tenants have Rovers really performed at Kingsmeadow. You’d have been forgiven for thinking we were in the delights of spring at the sun drenched Glanford Park on Saturday lunchtime. Rovers clearly wanted to make hay while the sun shone, as they started brightly in the first half. Continue reading “Scunthorpe United 1-1 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report”
Had this match been played out exclusively in the parts of the pitch that weren’t penalty area Rovers could be hugely satisfied, having moved the ball with a confidence that belied the divisional gap. But football doesn’t work that way and in the two 18-yard-boxes the clinical difference told; despite winning a dozen corners Rovers failed to test Wayne Hennessey, Palace were ruthless. Yes, that’s right this fanzine has a podcast. Still. After an extended period on gardening leave podular STAND has finally been risen from its slumber by FA Cup Fever. Not only has Doncaster Rovers’ best FA Cup run in over 60 years brought excitement to the town, it’s also managed to bring three of our regular contributors around a microphone for an hour.
