Last month I, along with two other writers of this fanzine, was lucky enough to be at a big swanky awards do in Leicester Square. This was the annual FSA Awards, and though they ushered us in via a side entrance less we get ideas above our station, it was still the sort of do that has table plans and a three course meal of immaculately laid out cuisine, and big screens that run you through the nominees.

We won an award last week. A proper big hefty one too. As shiny as it is weighty and given to us at a posh do with a table plan and cameras and people you’ve heard of. It’s the second time popular STAND fanzine has been the FSF’s Fanzine of the Year. And you might think that being given that trophy, and having the effort we’ve put in to this ‘zine recognised would be the highlight of our year. And you’d be right, it was. For a week. As you’ll be acutely aware – not least because we bang on about it at every opportunity – popular STAND fanzine is ‘not for profit’. What that means is we meet our costs – printing, postage, envelopes – then whatever’s left we save up ready to give away to local good causes. Earlier this month, popular STAND fanzine was crowned Fanzine of the Year at the 2016 Football Supporters’ Federation Awards. ‘I bet this makes all those late nights worth it,’ a lot of people have said to me in the days and weeks afterwards. It doesn’t. Not directly. I don’t want to seem disingenuous; it is a huge honour and something I am incredibly proud of, but it isn’t what makes the effort of putting the fanzine together worth it. When the shops have already begun their January sales, and the lampposts have been wound in twinkling lights since October it can be easy to forget the true joy of Christmas.
